George and Mara Vasvatekis: Your Trusted Team On and Off the Court

George Vasvatekis came to Nantucket for a date in the summer of 2012, though he ended up falling in love with the island instead. While still an undergraduate at Bryant University—and working full time for then-U.S. Senator Scott Brown—George obtained his real estate license in 2010 and purchased his first investment property through an online auction from his dorm room, launching what would become a 16-year career in real estate brokerage, development and investment. In 2015, he came to ’Sconset to lead an investment group involved in the restoration of the historic ’Sconset Store at 25 Broadway.

Mara Schmidt arrived the following summer as a professional WTA player, taking time off from the professional world tour to teach at the Siasconset Casino. For eight full summers, they lived parallel lives just 500 feet apart—Mara at the Casino and George at 25 Broadway, and even up on stage, where George acted in On the Isle’s production of Titanic the Musical. “In a village as small and interconnected as ’Sconset, it’s still hard for us to believe we managed to miss one another for so long,” George said. Mara agreed. “I never thought I’d find the love of my life here,” she added. “It’s kind of crazy.”

In September 2023, they were set up at the same ’Sconset dinner party, and last summer, they were married on Nantucket. As partners in life and at Coldwell Banker Realty, they’ve become a formidable tandem in Nantucket’s real estate scene— “your trusted team, on and off the court,” as they say.

“Working together as a husband-and-wife team happened naturally,” George said. “Our personalities and skill sets complement each other, and we both genuinely love the relationship-driven side of the business—we approach clients less as transactions and more as long-term relationships built on trust and connection.” The seasonal rhythm of island life makes it work: Mara is devoted entirely to her role as Assistant General Manager at the Casino, while in the quieter offseason months she steps in alongside George, supporting the business and helping build it together. And she keeps things moving during the stretches when George is away serving with the U.S. Navy Reserve.

They have also embraced the community they fell in love with. George currently serves on the Board of Directors of On the Isle, the ’Sconset theater company, and was appointed by then-Governor Charlie Baker to the Board of Trustees of Cape Cod Community College, while Mara serves as a volunteer coach for the Nantucket Whalers girls tennis team. They are also active members of the Monument Running Group, regularly turning out for runs and races across the island. “Together, we try to support local organizations, events and businesses whenever we can, and we genuinely treasure the relationships we’ve built here,” George said.

“Nantucket is a one-of-one market,” he added. “There are very few places in the country with this combination of historic preservation, natural beauty, conservation, limited inventory, strong long-term values and such a deeply rooted sense of community. But beyond the real estate itself, what makes Nantucket so special is the lifestyle—the pace, the charm, the walkability, the connection to nature, the feeling of community. It’s one of those rare places where you can truly disconnect and reconnect at the same time.” Their affiliation with Coldwell Banker Realty also allows them to pair deep local market knowledge with the reach and resources of one of the world’s largest real estate networks.

Sorella is Italian for “sister.” For Megan Calabrese, the founder of Sorella Management, the translation gets to the heart of the sistership she created. “We approached this from day one as a team that deeply understands what it means to listen, care and execute,” Calabrese said. “It is extremely gratifying to have the opportunity to build a company with your friends, and hopefully show the next generation that they can too.” Sorella Management, which offers a comprehensive suite of property and project management services designed to take the complexity out of homeownership, is now bringing that promise to Nantucket. How did Sorella Management get its start? Calabrese: Sorella was created from a genuine desire to provide a level of service that takes a client-first approach, treating each relationship like a partnership, and less like a transaction. Drawing on 20 years in real estate management, this experience allowed me to learn from great mentors the importance of strong foundational industry knowledge, and the importance of building a team and platform that can provide consistent service with an unwavering focus on the client. What sets the company apart? Calabrese: Precision is our standard, and it’s backed by both experience and infrastructure. We were intentional about building Sorella around a high-tech, high-touch approach. On the tech side, we’ve implemented an efficient, streamlined platform that keeps everything organized in one central location—client communications, maintenance requests, financial information, vendor coordination and property documentation—so nothing falls through the cracks and our clients always have visibility into what’s happening with their property. On the touch side, that’s where our team’s character really shows. We know our clients, we know their homes, and we work to anticipate their needs before they have to ask. That combination of smart systems thinking and genuine human care is something you simply don’t find with larger, more transactional companies.
